Current studio view with small cradled panels, freshly sealed and waiting for canvas. I am expecting a delivery of 25 panels ranging from 36"x40" to 48"x65" any day now, so I had to get these 22 smaller pieces ready to go. In the back ground you can see a new piece for RARE gallery and other works in various stages of progression.

Summer is approaching fast and I am done teaching in one week. Once May starts, I will be able to be in the studio full time for 4 months, I can not wait.

If I could say it in words there would be no reason to paint.

Delivered Work an Empty Studio and Deer

I delivered my work for Two Waters to Gallery MAR on Saturday. We had the work all over the place so that we could look it all over before I left. I can't wait to see it all hung.

The bittersweet studio view after delivering the work. It is nice to have some space to move, but kind of sad to see the studio so empty...although not for long. I have already started working on four new paintings and stretching up more canvas. Soon I will be wishing for more space and looking forward to shipping the latest paintings.

On the way back home as I crossed the vast openness of South Pass I stopped to photograph a meeting of the South Pass ladies winter sunning club. I also took some great photos of some horses and spotted two huge bald eagles. I love living in the West.

So a little backstory first...I dropped of 11 works at Visions West Gallery in Livingston MT last week.
When we started looking at the space, we decided that it needed more work! I had two pieces at the Denver location of Visions West Gallery, so after my vacation in Estes Park last week, I dropped down to Denver and picked them up.

We got home on Monday and I put the two pieces in the studio and then made the fatal mistake of unwrapping them. As I looked at them, I felt that they were not in line with the other work for the show, so I started painting on them again. If you are a painter you understand this whole thing.

Yes there is/was a certain amount of risk involved by messing with two perfectly fine paintings before a show, but I couldn't help myself. As an artist if I am not taking risks then the work gets stale and formulaic. So the two pieces below are reworks...I think they are better paintings!

I drove some work to the gallery last weekend and took pictures along the way. When I travel alone, I like to take random shots while driving...I just point the camera, cross my fingers, keep my eyes on the road, and shoot. sometimes I get some really interesting things. It was an amazing day, clear sky, warm, the last bit of summer still hanging on. I kept reminding myself how fortunate I am to live where I do.

"Simple/Complex 1-20" from the series "Simple Things for Complex Times."

In recent months there have been a great amount articles, blogs, e-seminars, and conversations about the art world surviving the current economy. I know many supporters of the arts and collectors are frustrated. In an attempt to allow more people to have access to art, I made a series (titled Simple Things for Complex Times)of 20 small mixed media paintings that are available at Lyndsay McCandles in Jackson,WY. Spink and Butler stand before a large oil and alkyd on board by Wyoming artist Matt Flint. The painting, entitled Dust, is their most recent acquisition. It employs abstracted plants and animals to suggest isolation and transformation. It offers a dream-like landscape of the artist's imagination.

"I like the texture and the colors," Spink says. "The techniques Flint uses, like scratching the surface, make it moody. When I look at Matt's work, I wonder what he's thinking about."

Central College Show, Pella Iowa

In February I traveled to Pella Iowa for a solo show at Central College. It was a nice relaxing time. I got meet with students and give a few talks about my work.

Pella is a quaint Dutch town that has an amazing old style butcher shop and two incredible bakeries. I ate to many dutch pastries and spent quite a bit of time in a coffee shop on town square.

On Monday morning I went to a nature preserve and watched 50 or more bald eagles flying over the river and nesting in huge trees by the water. I had never seen that many eagles together in one place.

I flew into Des Moines on a Saturday night and had most of Sunday to hang out and explore before driving to Pella. It just so happened that the Des Moines art center (which has a surprisingly good collection) had a Grant Wood show up complete with American Gothic. Grant Wood of course had his roots in Iowa. I always knew good things could come from the mid-west. It is always quite an experience to see work in person that you only know through reproductions.

As the title of this post suggests, I have some new things going on. First I have a new website at the same address http://www.mattflint.com/ but with a new look and feel. I have uploaded some new work to the site and am now able to upload content on a regular basis.

I am excited to work with the gallery and will have work available starting in mid March.

I have wanted to do some work that would combine the surface complexities of the oil paintings with a more immediate drawing like investigation. By using collaged layers of semi transparent papers and applying only water based media, I found I could layer up, manipulate, and quickly respond to ideas.

The results of my experimenting are three new pieces that are going to the show in Pella, Iowa. They are all 30"x22" collage, copy transfer, acrylic, gesso, and pencil on board.

Happy New Year! Thanks to everyone who supported me and my work this last year. It has been an amazing year. I had three solo shows, won an artists fellowship, built a studio, did some commission work, and was in multiple group shows. I am in the process of setting goals for next year and can't wait to see what happens.

I have a solo show at Central College in Pella, Iowa in February. I have already delivered some of the work and the rest is almost ready to go. Below are a few pieces that will be included in the show. This month I am showing work in our annual faculty show at CWC.

I had some collage/mono prints laying around in the studio that I really liked, but thought they could use something more. I worked back into each of the prints and added the birds. There is something quite nice and fragile about them. I really enjoy the contrast between the subtle value of the black ink and color/texture of the oil paint.

All of the works are 14"x11" on Rives BFK paper. The titles are Listening I, II and IV (don't ask what happened to III.) The work is available through Stewart Gallery.

Well, the studio is finally done and I am completely moved in! I was worried that if I moved spaces, I would have a long and difficult adjustment period. The new space feels like home. It is so wonderful to be able to actually move around and work on multiple pieces at once. In the old studio, I had space enough to only work on one piece at a time. Check out the pictures of the new space below.

This is a piece I finished in the Spring. It was used for the show card for my show at Chadron State College that opens the first of October.

One more bit of good news......I am happy to announce that I have signed on with the art consulting firm Soho Myriad out of Atlanta.

My opening at Lyndsay McCandless Gallery in Jackson Hole, WY was fun. Thanks Lyndsay, Sam, and Natalie!

The drive from Lander to Jackson for the opening...yes this is in June...it is Wyoming after all!

I found out in early June that I was one of three Wyoming artists to win a 2008 Wyoming Arts Council Fellowship Award. The award comes with a cash prize and a show in 2009.

The money that I won from the Fellowship will be put towards the construction of a free standing studio in my backyard. I have already started building and am thrilled to have more space to work. I borrowed the idea for the structure from a company out of California called modern sheds. Their structures look sleek and modern, mine however is looking more and more like a shed for horses. I guess it fits with my "Western" surroundings.

One last thing, I was invited to make a piece for a show at the Lark and Key Gallery in North Carolina. The show is titled "The Song cathcer Show" and is comprised of work inspired by music. I made a piece titled "Miles from Monterey" by West Indian Girl.

Well, I am down to the wire for my show at Lyndsay McCandless opening June 6. As usual and in true painter fashion I still have two pieces that I am working on. I am going to deliver the work on Friday and then immediately start working for my next show.

Now that I am done with teaching for the summer, I am thoroughly enjoying my studio time. I have been putting in 6 or more hours a day painting...it is fantastic!

My June show at Lyndsay McCandless is about a month away. I am currently finishing the last 6 paintings for the show. I should have around 25 pieces total. The piece below titled "Vestige" is the image that will be used for the show card.

If you are interested in pre-purchasing work before the show opens, please let me know and I will work with the gallery to ensure that you can get the piece (s) that you want.

Although it is cold and we are still getting snow, I have hope that Spring is almost here! I am currently working on an Illustration for a play called Monsterface, by New York playwright Daniel Roberts. I am also making work for my upcoming June show at LMC and preparing for an October solo show at Chadron State University in Chadron, Nebraska.

Spring seems to be coming quite quickly. I just took up cross country skate skiing this year and I am not ready for the snow to melt yet!

Here are some exciting things that are happening in and out of the studio:

I am preparing for a June show at Lyndsay McCandless Contemporary in Jackson, WY.

I have work in three different charity/fundraiser events around the state this spring: Postcards from the Wild West at the Nicolaysen Museum of Art, Casper, WY......Empty Bowls Project (to help fight hunger) in Cheyenne, WY....and the Who Dunnit Show? at the Jackson Hole Art Center.

I also have two University show possibilities coming up soon and have applied for a handful of fellowships/awards/grants/juried type opportunities.

At any given time I am working on 8-15 paintings at a time. Right now I have 13 in various stages of completion.

Recently I have been making some smaller collage and mixed media works. They are a nice compliment to my paintings and have really allowed me some freedom to explore ideas.

The imagery in the collages came from a few old books I picked up at a local used bookstore.
One of the books was written in the 1940s and titled "Wonder Book of the Worlds Progress."
It covers everything from cavemen to Aviation. The pages are worn and the quality of the printing is not that great. It has all of these fantastic images of Polar explorers that I have become fascinated with. These images fit so well with the guiding themes in my work of
isolation and transformation.
